5 must-have props for your personal branding photo-shoot

Whether you’re planning an epic personal branding photo-shoot with the photographer of your dreams, or you’re just wanting to up your bespoke social media stock photo game, there are a few foolproof props you shouldn’t be without.

1. Your laptop or tablet

Likely to be the engine room of your business, your laptop or tablet is essential. There are so many kinds of photos to be taken that involve your laptop - from close-ups of your hands typing, over-the-shoulder shots of you working on your website, to dreamy photos of you working at your favorite cafe with your laptop in front of you and a beautiful drink in hand. Laptops and tablets help demonstrate professionalism, organization, inspiration and connection.

Top tip: Ideally take any protective plastic covers off, this will help keep your photos looking timeless. And always make sure the screen is nice and clean.

2. Your phone

In today's world, phones are often the primary means of connecting with our communities, whether it's through calls, emails, or social media interactions. Consider capturing images that exemplify your phone usage in your business. This is a great way to show your clients how you operate and where they can find you even before they've spoken to you.

Pro-tip: Before taking the photos, it's best to give the screen a good wipe.

3. Your favorite notebook and pen

Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart.” - William Wordsworth

Whether you're scribbling your wildest dreams, planning your next adventure, or simply jotting down your daily to-do, there's just something about putting pen to paper that feels downright magical. As a photographer, one of my absolute favorite moments is capturing clients in the act of writing, their pens gliding across the page in a flurry of creativity and inspiration. These photos are so versatile, perfect for showcasing on your website, social media pages, email newsletters, or even your PDF downloads. With just one snap, you can convey thoughtfulness, reflection, and the sheer joy of letting your imagination run wild on the page!

Top tip: Choose a notebook in your brand colors to help bring your photographs together!

4. Your favorite books

Books are an excellent way to connect with your audience. Whether it's a book about your industry, professional development, or a favorite novel that you enjoy reading with a cozy blanket and a cup of tea on a rainy day (give me an Austen or Brontë novel, and I'm content!). Regardless of the kind of book, it gives a glimpse into your personality and values.

Pro Tip: Incorporating large text quotes from books into your brand messaging is a great way to showcase your brand's message without explicitly stating it to your clients and community.
