5 Things Parents Think Will Ruin Their Family Photos — And Why They Won’t
Madison, Wisconsin Family Photographer

If you've ever thought about booking family photos and immediately started worrying about everything that could possibly go wrong, you're not alone.
Maybe you're thinking:
What if my toddler won't sit still?
What if my kids don't smile?
What if everyone looks awkward?
What are we even going to wear?
What if my husband hates having his picture taken?
And perhaps the biggest fear of all:

What if we spend all this money and don't get the beautiful family photos I was hoping for?
As a Madison, Wisconsin family photographer, I can tell you something I've learned after years of photographing families:
Your family does not have to be perfect for your photos to be beautiful.
In fact, some of the things parents worry about the most are often the exact things that create the most genuine, memorable images.
So let's talk about the five things parents think will ruin their family photos—and why they probably won't.

1. “My kids won't cooperate.”
This is probably the number one concern I hear from parents.
And I get it.
You've spent time getting everyone dressed. You've made sure everyone has eaten. You've packed snacks, wipes, hairbrushes, backup clothes and approximately 47 things your children may or may not need.
The last thing you want is to arrive at your family photo session and have your toddler announce:
“I DON'T WANT PICTURES.”
Or your preschooler decides running in the opposite direction is suddenly their life's purpose.
Or your teenager gives you the world's most dramatic eye roll.
Here's the thing:
Your kids don't have to cooperate perfectly for us to get beautiful photos.
Kids are kids.
They get distracted. They get shy. They get silly. They get tired. They want to explore.
And that's okay.
My job isn't to force your children into sitting perfectly still and smiling at the camera for an hour.
Instead, I'll use prompts, movement, games, interaction and connection to keep the session moving. Sometimes we'll have everyone looking at the camera. Other times I'll have you walk together, snuggle, play, whisper something silly or simply hang out with one another.
Some of my favorite images happen in the moments when nobody is looking at the camera.
A little hand reaching for yours.
A child running into Dad's arms.
Siblings laughing together.
A toddler hiding behind Mom's legs.
A big kid giving their little brother a squeeze.
Those moments are part of your family story.
Your child isn't ruining your family photos by being a child.
They're giving me something real to photograph.

2. “Nobody in our family knows how to pose.”
If the phrase “I don't know what to do with my hands” has ever crossed your mind before a photo, welcome to the club.
Most people aren't professional models.
You shouldn't be expected to know how to stand, where to look, what to do with your arms or how to make a natural-looking smile happen on command.
That's my job.
During your family photography session, I'll guide you.
I'll tell you where to stand.
I'll give you things to do.
I'll create opportunities for interaction.
I'll adjust poses when something doesn't feel comfortable.
And I'll help you move naturally between more traditional portraits and candid moments.
You don't have to show up knowing how to pose.
You just have to show up ready to be with your people.
I'll take care of the rest.
And honestly? I don't want your gallery to look like a collection of perfectly repeated poses anyway.
I want variety.
I want the photograph where everyone is looking at the camera.
But I also want the photograph where your daughter is laughing at something Dad said.
I want the close-up of your son's hand wrapped around yours.
I want the giant family hug.
I want the in-between moments.
Those are often the images that become the favorites.

3. “My kids aren't going to smile.”
Here's a little secret:
They don't have to.
Of course, we'll absolutely get photographs of your family looking at the camera and smiling.
But I don't believe every photograph needs to be a giant, toothy grin.
Because that's not what your family looks like all the time.
Your kids might smile when you tickle them.
They might laugh when Dad says something ridiculous.
They might light up when their sibling whispers something in their ear.
They might have a serious little expression while they're exploring.
They might bury their face into your shoulder.
I want all of it.
When you look through your gallery years from now, I want you to remember more than what everyone looked like.
I want you to remember how this season felt.
The missing front teeth.
The curls.
The way your youngest always wanted to be held.
The way your teenager smiled when they thought nobody was watching.
The way your children fit into your arms at this exact age.
Those details are part of your story, too.
So if your child doesn't smile on command?
We don't panic.
We keep going.

4. “My husband hates family photos.”
Let's be honest.
Sometimes Mom is the one who books the session and Dad is the one who needs a little convincing.
Maybe he's not particularly interested in spending an hour taking pictures.
Maybe he says he “doesn't know what to do.”
Maybe he thinks family photos are awkward.
Or maybe he simply doesn't love being photographed.
Good news:
He doesn't have to love being photographed.
He just has to show up.
I'll keep things moving so you're not standing around endlessly waiting for someone to take the picture.
I'll give you prompts instead of asking everyone to “just pose.”
And I'll encourage interaction rather than making everyone stare at the camera for the entire session.
Because your partner's job isn't to become a professional model for the afternoon.
Their job is to be Dad.
To throw the kids in the air.
To hold your hand.
To give your daughter a hug.
To make your son laugh.
To be part of the story.
Years from now, you won't regret having photographs of the people you love together.
And you might even find that Dad ends up enjoying the session more than he expected.
It happens.

5. “What if we don't get the perfect family photo?”
This might actually be the biggest fear underneath all the others.
You've seen beautiful family photos online.
Everyone is smiling.
The light is gorgeous.
The kids look adorable.
Nobody appears to be melting down.
And you're thinking:
“What if my family doesn't look like that?”
Here's what I want you to know:
Your family doesn't need to look like someone else's family.
Your family should look like yours.
Maybe your kids are goofy.
Maybe your toddler needs a snack break halfway through.
Maybe your teenager would rather be anywhere else.
Maybe your family is loud.
Maybe you're the family that is always laughing.
Maybe your kids are incredibly affectionate.
Maybe they're a little more reserved.
Maybe your family has a dog who absolutely must be included.
All of that is okay.
The goal isn't to manufacture a perfect version of your family for the camera.
The goal is to create photographs that feel like you.
Beautiful portraits.
Real connection.
Little details.
Big laughs.
Quiet moments.
The chaos.
The cuddles.
The personalities.
The people you love most.
That's what I want your gallery to hold.

So What Actually Makes a Great Family Photo?
It isn't perfectly coordinated outfits.
It isn't everyone smiling at exactly the same time.
It isn't a perfectly behaved toddler.
It isn't knowing how to pose.
And it certainly isn't having a “photogenic” family.
The best family photographs usually come from connection.
A hand being held.
A child leaning into Mom.
A dad making his daughter laugh.
Siblings being silly together.
A family walking hand-in-hand.
A giant group hug.
A quiet moment between a parent and child.
Those are the things you'll recognize years from now.
And those are the things I want to preserve for you.
Your Only Job Is to Show Up
When you book a family photography session with me, you don't need to spend the weeks leading up to it worrying about whether your children will behave perfectly.
You don't need to practice smiling.
You don't need to know how to pose.
You don't need to create a Pinterest-perfect version of your family.
You just need to show up.
I'll help you prepare.
I'll guide you through your session.
I'll work with your kids.
I'll give you direction when you need it and space when a genuine moment is unfolding.
And most importantly, I'll give you permission to stop worrying about getting the perfect picture and simply be with your family.
Because someday, your children will be bigger.
Their hands won't be quite so little.
Their personalities will change.
The way they fit into your arms will be different.
And you'll be so glad you documented this version of your family.
Not the perfect version.
Your version.
